Visibility of Final Mark Column

We’ve had a couple of questions in the last day or two about the use of the new Final Mark column and whether it should be made visible to students.

Grade Return

The Final Mark column was created in the Grade Centre just before Christmas and, by default, it is not visible to students (note the little circle with the red/pink line).

The Final Mark column replaces the White Sheets for any module, and this is where you should put final, agreed marks for each student, to be returned to the Exams Office.

The Final Mark column should only ever contain a number (between 0 and 100) or INC for incomplete results.

Marks for overseas/visiting students for modules completed in semester 1 should be entered into the Final Mark column by close of business on Friday 22nd January, as per the email from the International Office.

In the past, white sheets were never made visible to students. Therefore, our recommendation is that the Final Mark is not made visible to students.

The Provisional column can be used, as per instructions from Academic Council, for communicating provisional or indicative grades to students for modules completed in semester 1.

I thought we were not supposed to return INC results, but use 0 instead?

Thanks for the question Rónán. Correct, the requirements for the project always included the ability to return INC to indicate Incomplete results.

when the final mark is put in the column for overseas/visiting students, do I need to do anything to ‘upload’ the mark to exams, or is this done automatically?
    thanks, Karen.

      Thanks for the question Karen.

As far as I am aware, once the mark is put in the final mark column for visiting students – that’s all you have to do. It will be taken directly from there on the appropriate date (currently 22nd January).

      Hi again Karen,
you’ll have seen more recent communication which states that there is an extra step involved. I was not aware of this at the time of writing. Apologies if I mislead you.

You say that the “Final Mark” column “replaces the White Sheets for any module, and this is where you should put final, agreed marks for each student, to be returned to the Exams Office”. Therefore this column should not be completed until marks have been agreed with the external examiner. Is that correct? (Obviously visiting students are a different category)

Hi John, and thanks for your question,

I’m going to answer your question in 2 parts.

Now that we know about the extra step to “commit” your final mark column, you are advised not to “commit” the marks in the column until they have been agreed with the external examiner (and before whatever deadline is given by Exams Office).

However, there is no problem with entering marks now, or any time up to the extern’s visit, with the understanding that they are still provisional.
