Organising your Grade Centre by Course Instance Code

The new Course Instance column in the grade centre gives you information for each student about which programme he/she is enrolled on. A missing course instance code may mean that the student is not correctly registered for a module, and students should be encouraged to check their registration details in that case.

However, the course instance column can also be used by you to organise your Grade Centre.

  • You can sort the list of students by Course Instance, which groups students from the same programme together.
  • You can create a view of the Grade Centre that contains only the students from a single course instance.
  • You can download a file from the Grade Centre that contains only the students from a single course instance.

To see how this can be done, I’ve created a short video that takes you through the steps involved. Click on the link below to view:

Hi Sharon – is is correct that you can only sort by one column at a time at the moment? – that is, if I sort by alphabet first and then course instance it does not currently remain in alphabetical order within the sorted course instance blocks (without creating another view). A little painful. Thank you

Hi Dara, thanks for the question. I suspect you are right, but I need to do a little testing. I would expect that if you sort first by last name and then by course instance – you should get it ordered by last name within a course instance. But nothing would surprise me!
In that case, you might be best advised to use the smart views, which allow you to view by course instance, and then you can also ensure that the view is sorted by last name.
